Programs, Activities & Clubs Hosted by MYCA

MYCA hosts a myriad of programs, clubs, sports, activities, and much more for the youth to benifit from. Want to start another program? Be the president of a new club? Coach a sports team? The possibilities are immense, and there is always an opprotunity for an opening, all you have to do is ask.

As of now, there are two Clubs MYCA hosts, a Chess Club, and a Women Yoga program.

  • *MYCA Chess:
MYCA Chess Club is to promote sportsmanship, critical thinking, friendly Islamic competition, and fun. The club will attempt, to the best of its members interests and resources, to support its members who just wish to play for fun as well as those who wish to compete in local, state, national, or international competitions.

    Eligibility for Membership
All MYCA members are welcome to participate in the activities of MYCA Chess. Each individual is considered in good standing with the MYCA Chess, unless other cited in writing by the President. Individuals no longer in good standing may be barred from participation in any MYCA Chess sponsored event or activity. An individual with this status may be reinstated by a written request to the President, who may accept or reject the appeal. Individuals will only be barred for bad sportsmanship, cheating, or other disruptive/Un-Islamic behavior.

MYCA chess seeks to get enough members to elect officers and begin regular playing times, strategy meetings, skill trainings, and team building activities. It will then develop its own internal infrastructure and participate in friendly competitions as seen appropriate by its membership. If there is an interest in moving on to the competitive field, MYCA chess will support those members who wish to compete by practice, brother/sisterhood, and support at matches. MYCA may see fit to appoint a guardian to travel with and support competitive teams at different matches as needed.

    Why Play Chess?
Chess is an exercise of infinite possibilities for the mind, one which develops mental abilities used throughout life: concentration, critical thinking, abstract reasoning, problem solving, pattern recognition, strategic planning, creativity, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation, to name a few. Chess can be used very effectively as a tool to teach problem solving and abstract reasoning. Learning how to solve a problem is more important than learning the solution to any particular problem. Through chess, we learn how to analyze a situation by focusing on important factors and by eliminating distractions. We learn to devise creative solutions and put a plan into action. Chess works because it is self-motivating. The game has fascinated humans for almost 2000 years, and the goals of attack and defense, culminating in checkmate, inspire us to dig deep into our mental reserves.
